Pesantren as a religious educational institution is very closed to the paternalistic culture. From the perspective of construc-tifism theory, social reality is constructed by every community based on their understanding taken from factual standarts, reality and rationality in their community. It means that every person in pesantren is the performer of the patriarchal cultur. However, some of the individuals disapprove to accept the culture. These people, soon after, try to involve in non governmental organizations to spread their ideas. In this case, simbolic interaction theory is relevan to state that human being always engross to understanding process actively. He faces his own awareness to look at someting beyond his understanding. Subsequently, he asks how to understand?, What should be done?, and how to determine his attitude derived from his consideration and evaluation.
